Medical clinic 5 is an internal medicine clinic specialized in oncology and haematology.

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Martin Wilhelm MD, the clinic treats patients with illnesses from the full range of internal medicine, and has its own functional areas for sonography, echo cardiography and endoscopy. Another focal aspect of the clinic includes infectious and tropical diseases. Most of the necessary cytological diagnosis work can be carried out in the clinic's own laboratories.

Oncology and haematology

The clinic offers the full range of medication-based therapy to treat the whole spectrum of malignant diseases. A haematology-oncology intensive care unit offers intensive, high-dose chemotherapy as required for example for leukaemia, lymphomas and some solid tumours. Many of these therapies are carried out in cooperation with other special clinics and institutes and as part of national and international clinical studies. For years, special attention has been devoted to the development of new drugs and treatment concepts, particularly for supportive and palliative therapy.

Stem cell transplants

The unit for stem cell transplants (Dr. Mildred Scheel Ward) set up with assistance from Deutsche Krebshilfe (German Cancer Relief) allows the clinic to produce bone marrow and blood stem cell preparations and to perform autologous and allogenous bone marrow and blood stem cell transplants according to current international standards.

Here 10 to 12 isolated beds are available in clean rooms depending on demand. The rooms are all equipped with TV, VCR and phone, together with a separate washroom. A special outpatient clinic looks after patients before and after their stay in hospital.

Special haematology / immunology laboratory

Examination of blood samples, bone marrow, fluids, discharge, tissue biopsy samples and more besides using histology, cytomorphology, immunocytology and flow cytometric methods.

Sampling, treating, processing, cryo preservation, storage and quality assurance of peripheral blood stem cell preparations and bone marrow transplant preparations.

Psycho-oncology

The clinic devotes special attention to integrating psycho-social support for cancer patients in oncology therapy.

This has become possible as a result of close cooperation with staff in the clinic for psychosomatic and psychotherapeutic medicine (clinic director: Prof. Dr. W. Söllner MD), support from a psychologist working in the clinic and interdisciplinary involvement of nursing staff and public psycho-social support centres.

Working party biological cancer therapy

For ten years now staff at the clinic have been working on unconventional methods for treating cancer in the project "Biological cancer therapy" on behalf of Deutsche Krebshilfe.

The working party has an extensive archive of documentation and information material including scientific publications in this field and offers advice and support, consultation and specific training for those who are affected by or interested in this work.

In cooperation with a nutritional scientist, the working party "Biological cancer therapy" offers competent and individual advice on all aspects of cancer (including nutrition).

Infectiology

The clinic has many years of comprehensive experience in diagnosing and treating infectious diseases. The spectrum of diseases treated here extends from hepatitis through to tropical diseases (e.g. malaria).

Cytological examinations, including flow cytometry and malaria diagnosis, are carried out in the clinic's own laboratory.
