Medical Clinic 3 at Nuremberg Hospital is responsible
for providing health care over a very wide area for all aspects
of pneumology (lung and bronchial treatment) on a top level.
The range of services also includes the Medical Sleep Centre,
emphasis on pneumological allergology, and environment medicine
Pneumological oncology
Special expertise in the field of pneumological oncology,
i.e. in the diagnosis and therapy primarily of bronchial carcinomas,
but also pleura mesotheliomas. The clinic is equipped to perform
all modern diagnosis procedures, above all state-of-the-art
endoscopic procedures (bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy) through
to video chip auto fluorescence bronchoscopy for early detection
of bronchial carcinomas
Bronchoscopy
For therapeutic bronchoscopy, all modern procedures are available
from bronchoscopic laser therapy via brachytherapy (after-loading)
through to endoprosthesis implantation (silicone stents, wire
mesh stents). During studies and scientific cooperation projects,
state-of-the-art bronchoscopic diagnosis procedures are developed
in cooperation with leading international partners in industry,
so that many innovative examination and treatment methods are
available to the benefit of the patients from a very early
stage.
Bronchial carcinoma
Our clinic has a regular "Tumour conference: bronchial
carcinoma". Therapy decisions for patients with bronchial
carcinomas are discussed on an interdisciplinary basis in close
cooperation for example between thorax surgeons, radio therapists,
pathologists or haemato-oncologists.
The clinic offers extensive experience with chemotherapy for
bronchial carcinoma and pleura mesothelioma patients on the
wards or on an outpatient basis. Protocols for simultaneous
radio/chemotherapy are also used successfully in close cooperation
with the radiotherapy clinic. Participation in various international
therapy studies means that highly effective, advanced chemotherapy
drugs can be used at the earliest possible point in time, to
the benefit of our patients.
Obstructive lung disease
The pneumology clinic has a wealth of special experience in
treating obstructive lung disease, ranging from allergic bronchial
asthma via intrinsic bronchial asthma (infection asthma), chronic
bronchitis, chronic obstructive bronchitis through to lung
emphysema (COPD).
Interstitial lung disease
We look after a large number of patients with so-called interstitial
lung disease, including various forms of lung fibrosis, sarcoidosis
(Boeck's disease), extrinsic allergic alveolitis (e.g. "birdkeeper's
lung") and many other rare lung diseases, as well as lung
manifestations of so-called systemic diseases (e.g. Wegener's
disease, polymyositis).
Tuberculosis
The clinic also has a tuberculosis department with separate
isolation wards and special expertise in the diagnosis and
therapy of tuberculosis in all its possible forms
Pulmonary arterial hypertonia
Recently new therapeutic possibilities have developed for
the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertonia (PAH). We have
special experience with this disease and treat a large number
of patients with these new drugs (e.g. Bosentan® , Ilomedin®,
Ventardis®, Viagra®), sometimes in combinations. We
have all necessary equipment required for diagnosis and progress
control.
Cystic fibrosis
Increasingly we are treating more adult patients with cystic
fibrosis and Kartagener syndrome ("dismotile cilia syndrome",
PCD) in cooperation with the hospital's children's and youth
clinic.
Medical Sleep Centre
The Medical Sleep Centre at Nuremberg Hospital is the
largest medical sleep centre in Northern Bavaria and offers
all the latest possibilities for diagnosis on the wards and
with outpatients, from the outpatient "screening unit" through
to complete cardio-respiratory polysomnography in the sleep
laboratory (8 cubicles). We also have the possibility of standardised
vigilance testing (e.g. "Vigimar") or objective fatigue
testing (pupillography). Every year nearly 3000 polysomnographies
are performed in the sleep laboratory; nasal ventilation therapy
(CPAP, BIPAP, auto CPAP and others) are used for more than
500 patients with sleep apnoea syndrome or obesity hypoventilation
syndrome. The clinic works together on a close basis with the
psychiatric clinic and the ENT clinic in Nuremberg Hospital.
Non-invasive respiration
The clinic has a wealth of experience in non-invasive respiration
(home respiration, intermittent self respiration) in patients
with respiratory insufficiency, e.g. as part of kyphoscoliosis
or neurological disease. The clinic also includes the institute
for preventive pneumology, whose range of services includes
for example individual counselling to give up smoking as well
as group training.
